When we were in Thailand we were certainly trying to do it a bit more budget than our first time around. We had spent a lot of money on our first trip here and never really tried street food or bartering. All of that was about to change… We were in Thailand as three people living off one income this time around so we needed to learn how to live like the locals and eat on a budget, even in the pricey Bangkok shopping district.
Where not to eat
We quickly found out that eating in the hotels was rather pricey… Even some restaurants with doors were charging a fortune. we decided from day one to eat or drink in the hotels as little as possible during our stays because the food was crazily overpriced compared to 30 seconds down the street outside.
Night markets line the streets in the evenings, but do not be fooled – not all of these actually serve food! You need to pick wisely which area to go to or you could be walking around for quite some time trying to find something. When you do eventually fine some street stalls offering food make sure to take a look around the floor of the cart. We found a few in the Bangkok shopping district with rats ripping into bags at the stall holders feet. You do not want to get sick just because you are hungry…
There are huge food courts in the malls here. A lot of tourists do not even think to check here for food because why would you?! Well think again, you can find a whole range of local and authentic food in the malls so get searching. Bangkok shopping district has a plethora of malls and you will be missing out if you do not check out the food courts.
Just remember that a lot of the malls close up at night so you could find yourself strolling around empty malls like we did…
Check out the Platinum mall in the morning. There is a food court on the sixth floor serving a whole range of food. We got fresh fruit shakes and cranberry waffles for roughly £1.80 per person. We were filled up right into the afternoon after that breakfast!
