Five months until take off

So most people know by now about our upcoming epic adventure. We fell in love with travel and fell in love with Asia when we went in May 2016. We plan go back and it is officially five months until take off. Five months until we board that plane to Bangkok with a backpack each and nothing more.

Five months until take off
We will have nothing left but a backpack full of clothes

We fly on September 24th from Edinburgh – Doha with Qatar Airways, and again from Doha – Bangkok with Qatar Airways. (Can you tell we love Qatar Airways.)

The trip

As I mentioned above the idea for the trip came about because of our previous travel in Thailand. We fell in love with the country so naturally it was out first port of call (after 19 hours in Qatar as an exploring layover.) During our layover we will be using the Doha hop on-hop off bus to visit the most exciting tourist destinations and hopefully will be spending the afternoon on Banana Island checking out their private beach and pool area.

We have just confirmed out first three nights with the Amari Watergate Bangkok in an Executive Club Room and we cannot wait. We will be back and forth to Bangkok a few times so are looking for hotel recommendations for the other stays.

We plan to spend the next 6/7 weeks in Thailand before flying to Hong Kong (and visiting China and Macau from there,) then Taiwan, The Philippines then its all kind of up in the air from there. We have a general idea of what we will do that includes Singapore , Malaysia and back to Thailand. We are also meeting my aunt in Bali to spend her 50th birthday with her around March or April 2018.

We will be there for a total of 8, maybe 9 months. It all depends when we need to be back for a big Haley family holiday and whether we fly back via South Africa to visit a friend.

Where we stand now

Right now we are trying to rent out our house and sell everything in it. We have our second house viewing tomorrow at 10am, eek! I hope they take it. We have a room to rent until we go so for us it would be better to be in there and saving our rent money for the trip. Everything we own is slowly being added to this blog and sold on our home clearance pages as people want things. Whatever is left will be given to charity. We may even take some of Travis’ old clothes to Bangkok and hand them in to an orphanage if we have the space.

Our most recent trip to Ibiza

We will be writing a post to describe in detail how we will be funding the trip a number. We won’t make any money by renting our place out as we pay a monthly mortgage, so we will be working to pay our way. I already work remotely and David is looking for remote work now. We have an online business too but we will go into detail about this in the funding post.

Our next move

We are simply trying to kill the time until we can go. I already work online and ideally David will too by the time we go. We have a trip coming up to Barcelona in June, so we are preparing for that. We have a few sponsorship deals in the UK we need to do too for food reviews so we are looking forward to that!

Until then we will be working on our travel stories and making our website better and more enjoyable for our readers.

It is now only five months until take off #travel #familytravel

    • Thanks Shirley, we will most definitely be keeping up with yours too because they are so helpful to developing our writing! Thanks for the support and for stopping by

  • Sounds like an epic trip- no wonder you’re so excited! Sometimes the waiting game before a big trip is the hardest, but sounds like you’ve got plenty to keep you occupied in the meantime.

    • Oh I totally agree. I often sit imagining myself somewhere more hot and beautiful. It will pass quickly with everything we have to get done until then

  • It’s amazing to know that there’s so much thinking and monetary calculations before embarking on a world trip. May be you can help me with some tips to get remote online jobs. (Ambuj Saxena)

  • Eeek! How exciting – it’s 6 months until we head off to the same place – Bangkok! Thanks for your comment on my new blog, maybe we will bump into each other on the road!

    • That would be amazing, we will still be in Thailand when you arrive actually. We should totally do a meet and greet, we could interview each other for the blogs 😊

  • Sounds like an incredible trip coming up! It always gets a little hectic when you’re trying to tie up loose ends before traveling. Best of luck and have an amazing travel experience.

  • Such an exciting time on the cusp of an epic adventure. On one hand, the time will fly right by but on the other hand it will seem like forever and a day until you actually go. It’s amazing how much there is to do before you turn your life on end and fly across the world. Best of luck to you guys.

  • Sounds like you have quite the adventure coming up. I went on a 6-week trip through SE Asia five years ago, and it inspired me to reorganize my life and really prioritize travel. It seems like Thailand at the same effect on you! Good luck with the craziness ahead. I am in the midst of dealing with visa paperwork to move to China, so I feel your pain!

    • That is exactly what happened. I wanted to got for ten years before i did. I would never delay travel now. Which part of China are you heading to? We will be visiting Shenzhen this year

  • This sounds like a great plan! I hope you will enjoy it a lot! I bet you can’t wait for those 5 months to be over ^^

  • So excited for you guys!! What a thrilling time right before a big trip. It’s a whole new life ahead of your family. If you’re coming through Cambodia during your trip, let me know! My partner and I live in Phnom Penh. Happy to share any advice/answer questions about Cambodia.

  • What an exciting adventure!! I can’t wait to read about your journey. The longest I’ve traveled was 7 and a half weeks. 5 months sounds like a dream come true. Enjoy every second.

    • Thank you! We will be away about 9 months, but it is only 5 until we leave! 7 weeks is longer than have ever done so far! How was it and where did you go?

  • Good on you for taking off on such an adventure. Asia rocks! Good luck with sorting out your apartment. We did virtually the same thing in late 2015 when 6 months after buying our apartment in London, we put everything in storage, rented out the flat and took off to South America. Best decision we ever made!

  • The waiting game is beautiful, too. It’s like reverse nostalgia. You are already making memories in your mind that you have yet to make. It’s beautiful. Good luck and enjoy the journey!

    • Hi Jordan! We are funding it in a few ways, but I actually work remotely which is our main income. I can give you a lot of advice if you want to chat just let me know! There are so many ways you can make the move to freedom!

  • Sounds like you have an amazing trip planned and a lot of work ahead of you yet. I always enjoy planning and preparing for a trip. It is almost like traveling itself when you are thinking about it and itself can be really fun.
