Loy Krathong Chiang Mai is a popular Chiang Mai festival. It happens once a year and this year the Thailand lantern festival 2017 runs from November 2nd-5th. This is the traditional festival rather than the event put on for tourists. Loy Krathong day began on the 2nd for the locals but typically it begins a few days later for the tourist event. Find out about my rather interesting experience at the Loy Krathong festival.
Thailand lantern festival 2017
We pretty much planned our whole trip around the Thailand lantern festival 2017. We made sure we would be in Chiang Mai for Loy Krathong day and we were glad we did. We happened to need to go to the post office to post home a backpack on the day of the 3rd of November. It was here we saw that many people were making and offering to sell the Loy Krathong tealight holders. These tealight holders are a magnificent floral decoration that you let off into the river.
After packing up our box and sending it back home to family we noticed that the Post Office was also selling the Loy Krathong day tealight holders. They were well made and the type that does not cause harm to the fish or environment so we decided to snap one up right away.
Getting out Loy Krathong festival tealight holder
We decided to pick one up from the Post Office because we had no idea where else we might buy one (hint: there are about 3 million of them on sale on the Mae Ping River later in the day.) I went back inside to pay the ladies who made them and the woman who had helped us with our package came back over to help me out.
This is when she grabbed my hair and chopped a chunk right out! What on Earth?! I gave her a funny look and she finally decided to explain to me that putting some of your hair inside the Loy Krathong day tealight float would take away all your troubles and leave you with only the good things in life… We will find out soon if it worked.
Heading to the Loy Krathong festival
We headed down to the Mae Ping river for dinner and to experience the Thailand lantern festival 2017. There were a lot of locals where we were enjoying the Loy Krathong festival, their favourite Chiang Mai festival. We had decided to meet some friends so in order to find them we had to do a little exploring. We ended up in a much busier area where lanterns and tealights were being launched all over the place.
The Thailand lantern festival 2017 was incredible, way more impressive than any picture can capture.
